Security Industry Posts the Biggest Monthly Acquisition Spend on Record

The value of transactions this month is the highest ever recorded for a single month during the last three years, with two purchases each being more than a billion dollars. Acquisition transactions in September were 25 percent up on the same period in 2009, which incidentally was the highest number recorded in that year. Consolidation activity for the first nine months of this year far exceeds the same period in 2009 and 2010 looks like setting a new record; for most of the majors including Honeywell Security, Schneider, Siemens Building Technologies, Johnson Controls, Bosch Security Systems and UTC Fire & Security have yet to seal a deal this year.  read more

Fluidmesh Wireless Video Stands Guard over San Diego Beach Rescues

Lifeguards at Imperial Beach in San Diego, California were facing failing analog telephone lines and escalating lease line charges on their critical tower telecommunications system. In addition, they were hard pressed to adequately monitor a 50-yard-long section of shoreline after a portable tower was removed from the area during an improvement project in 2009. That section of the beach, although vulnerable to dangerous riptides, draws a large crowd. The blind spot that resulted for lifeguards when the tower was removed presented a safety concern as swimmers could easily go undetected into that stretch of beach and be overcome by the currents.  read more

Vemotion Interactive Surveillance Curbs Floods

Vemotion Interactive completed a pilot scheme, conducted in partnership with Shropshire County Council. Under this project, Vemotion video compression technology was used to allow real-time video images to be streamed from the Council’s surveillance control room over low bit rate networks. An interface from the standard mobile phone network was used to transmit the video over the Internet using GPRS, enabling Environment Agency staff to access these images on their laptops from any location.  read more

According to a new report from IMS Research, one of the main factors limiting growth in the wireless video surveillance market is the knowledge and skill-base of security systems integrators. Most integrators and installers of video surveillance equipment use wireless technology as a last resort and are much more comfortable with wired networking.
